A Corvair engine used for a small airplane, cost some lucky owner only $1522 for a rebuild


disassembled the engine, inspected it, replaced the cam, with the gear and lifters, both the main and rod bearing sets, and all the gaskets, honed the cylinders on GP, assembled it, put it on the test stand and did a break in run. 

I put it back in its crate and took it to the shipping point. Total Bill: $1,522.

I have a friend who salvaged an air-cooled rotary 9 cylinder diesel engine that was being used as power for a rural Wisconsin sawmill. 

He told me the engine had been started life in a WW2 Sherman M4 tank. After rebuilding the engine and the diesel injection system he looked at the handful of old "shotgun shells' for the starter but instead welded pipe fittings in place of the shell receiver and starts the engine with a surge of nitrogen gas from a high pressure bottle. 

The giant paperweight is mounted to a wheeled stand and he occasionally rolls it out and fires it up to rattle the neighborhood.

The M4 Sherman tank featured five primary engine options during WWII to ensure production, including the
Continental R975 radial
Ford GAA V8
 General Motors Twin Diesel, 
Chrysler A57 Multibank, 
and a Caterpillar radial diesel. 

These powerplants generally produced between 350 and 500 hp, with the Ford GAA V8 widely considered the most efficient and preferred engine.

the other way coal affected a century of transportation - it was the trade off, on top of pay, to get an engineer to design the BMW opposed cylinder motorcycle engine!


In Germany after World War I coal was scarce, forcing city dwellers to live in their kitchens as farmers did in winter. 

BMW, forbidden its former role as aircraft engine producers, accepted any production work, including building job lots of inferior motorcycle engines designed by outsiders. 

Irked by this, the company asked aircraft designer Max Friz to come up with a better engine design. Friz was a German mechanical engineer specializing in engine design, who had just made major contributions to the design of the racing engine for the 1914 Mercedes Grand Prix car (that won the French Grand Prix.) Friz also designed the first practical German aircraft engines in 1912-1913 while at Austro-Daimler. 

 Friz disliked surface vehicles, but changed his mind when offered coal to heat a bedroom which he could use as a drawing office. 

He applied rational aviation design, canceling vibration by choosing the self-balancing flat-twin as his engine architecture. He oriented it with its finned cylinders projecting right and left into undisturbed cooling air—not in the “wind shadow” of the front wheel. His basic design has now endured for over a century.

ever heard of the Cadillac Blackwing engine? I haven't heard about it for years... so, this is a good info post to tell you about it, or remind you of it (huh, a rare engine info post!)

the Blackwing V8 was ready for production by the end of 2018. At first, only 275 2019 CT6 sedans were to be sold in the United States with the Blackwing V8. Within minutes of the order books opening, all 275 units were sold.



The Blackwing's turbos could achieve 20 PSI of boost, or about 10–15 PSI more than a standard, turbocharged engine seen in mass-market vehicles.

All Blackwing V8s were mated to a GM 10L90 10-speed automatic transmission, and all CT6s with the Blackwing motor equipped received Cadillac's all-wheel drive system. 

The Platinum 4.2 Blackwing produced 500 horses, and the CT6-V received 50 more thanks to tweaks in the CT6-V's ECU.

Despite its cancelation, you can still order a Blackwing V8 long block off of Cadillac's parts website, so long as you have $14,587.26 to spend on it.

In total, about 1,200 CT6 4.2 Platinums and CT6-Vs were sold with the Blackwing V8 before the proverbial plug was pulled. Due to the aforementioned cost each LTA V8's production incurred, General Motors lost roughly $23 million on the entire Blackwing V8 program.

something new in aircraft: a University of Maryland spinoff firm has created a simpler, more affordable jet propulsion system for drones.


The digitally controlled modern-day pulsejet engine features no moving parts and claims to offer major improvements in the cost reduction and rapid production of future jet-powered aircraft.

the company announced the delivery of its first J-1 engines to an aerospace prime contractor on contract with the US government. It also revealed that additional customers are working to integrate the J-1 engines into their UAV designs.



This process results in a mechanically simple device that generates thrust for high-speed flight with fuel efficiency comparable to jet engines. It also offers advantages such as affordability, mid-air restart capability, and the ability to burn various fuels, including sustainable options like bioethanol-based E85.

427 vs 428 vs 429 (because I've never learned diddly squat about Ford engines except their sizes)

A '68 427 will be a heckuva motor, but it's not quite the same as the NASCAR racing motor that grew the legend. Starting in 1968, the 427 was switched from solid lifters to hydraulic, and the rated HP dropped from 425 to 390. You would still get the cross-bolted mains in the block, the stress relieved casting, etc., a very fine motor, but not the great racing motor. You should pay less for a '68 427 than for the earlier solid lifter versions. (Although, the '68 engine can be converted to solid lifters.)

The 428 was Ford's effort to get big cubic inches in a street motor. It was a lot cheaper to make than a 427, and was never intended for pure racing purposes. Basically, a 428 is just a stroked 390, and tuned for massive torque over horsepower. The Cobra Jet 428 motors in Mustangs used heads from the 427, plus other enhancements to really put some hair on their chest. But, from the factory it was never as powerful as the (solid lifter) 427.

427 - Essentially the rarest of the FE family of motor - built principally for factory "race cars" (and certian marine applications I believe) larger bore - shorter stroke - premium factory parts. Cross bolted bottom ends, modified oiling on some production runs (you have probably heard about "side-oilers") etc. NOS parts are very rare today and prices reflect it - IMO true 427's are not worth building unless you are restoring a car that was built with one.

428 - Also FE family. More common than the 427 but much less common than the 390/360/352 variants. Makes cubic inches with more stroke and less bore. Still generally a "performance" motor but not built with the same level of parts/care as the 427. Generally cheaper than 427 stuff but still not (IMO) cost effective to build (per HP given what you can get out of a 390 with aftermarket parts) unless you are restoring a 428 car or building a clone and want reasonable accuracy. That said - you can pretty easily replicate a 428 using quality late service blocks and aftermarket rotating assemblies.

429 - NOT an FE - this is a 385 series motor (same family as te 460). For pure HP/dollar you can probably get the most out of this engine at most price points if all you consider is the longblock build - the 385 series stuff is quite a bit more common than the FEs (although the FE crowd seems to be growing today and the aftermarket is attempting to get in gear). That said - you lose the cool factor of having an FE and if you have to modify mounts etc it might not be worth doing.

The Busch-Sulzer Bros. Diesel Engine Company was founded by Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch brewing company, in 1911, as a joint venture with Sulzer Brothers of Switzerland.

In 1897, Adolphus Busch acquired rights to build diesel engines in the United States, with Rudolph Diesel as a consultant.

The origins of the Busch-Sulzer Brothers Diesel Engine Company, the first firm to manufacture diesel engines in the United States, lie in the entrepreneurial activities of the St. Louis, Missouri, beer magnate, Adolphus Busch. Like many other late 19th century industrialists who sought “horizontal integration,” Busch began to expand his manufacturing interests in order to control the range of manufactures upon which his breweries were dependent. Thus inclined, he quickly perceived the commercial value of the new internal combustion engine invented by the German scientist, Dr. Rudolf Diesel, which burned cheap, liquid fuel under high cylinder pressure. After seeking the advice of an engineer, Edward D. Meier, Busch purchased exclusive rights for the U.S. patent in 1897, even before Diesel had perfected a working model.

 The first companies resulting from this were the Diesel Motor Company (1898–1902) of New York City and the American Diesel Engine Company (1902–1911), which relocated to St. Louis, Missouri in 1908 and was succeeded by Busch-Sulzer. 

Adolphus Busch, Meier, and Diesel died within six months of each other in 1913.




Although Busch acquired the rights to build Sulzer designs with the formation of Busch-Sulzer, the American joint venture preferred its own designs. 

The first submarines with Busch-Sulzer engines were the United States L-class submarines L-5 through L-8, designed by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company and launched 1916–17. Busch-Sulzer continued to produce engines for the US Navy and other customers through World War II, until 1946, after which its assets were sold to the Nordberg Manufacturing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
