In 1973, an aerospace engineer at NASA was bicycling to work when he noticed how the aerodynamic wakes of passing flat face COE semi trucks. Flat nose COEs were used because of the stupid overall length laws


A tractor-trailer doing 55 mph shoved aside 18 tons of air every single mile. Half the engine's power wasn't moving freight—it's just pushing air out of the way. That's fuel burning for nothing.

NASA engineers grabbed a beat-up Ford van from the motor pool and turned it into a test rig. They built a square aluminum box around it and started rounding off edges, sealing the bottom, measuring everything. Just rounding the front edges cut drag by 52%. Sealing up the underside saved another 7%.

Then they got serious. They leased a cab-over and went to work. Rounded the corners on the cab, barely lost any space inside, dropped drag by 40%. Rounded everything they could, lost 3% of interior room, cut drag by 54%. But the big win was closing up that gap between the tractor and trailer. That alone saved 20 to 25% on fuel. An owner-operator running 100,000 miles a year? That's 7,000 gallons staying in the tank.



So, yeah, aerodynamics, but why the hell was NASA wasting tax payer dollars on trucking? Was it because they'd put man on the moon and didn't have a damn clue what to do next to keep the budget numbers for the next fiscal budget year? I'm pretty sure NASA didn't accomplish a damn thing for a decade, until they got the shuttle flying, just to put satellites into space. Not that that was much changed from the rocket era, which had already perfected accomplished satellite placement. And now? Space X is 90% cheaper at doing the same job

hmmmm, designed for time trial racing, the Battaglin Piranha featured a large, fully solid and bulged front disc wheel, created to minimize aerodynamic drag.


During road testing, Roberto Visentini gained 3 seconds per kilometer compared to his regular time-trial bike. The plan was to use the Piranha in the prologue of the 1985 Giro d’Italia—until the UCI banned the bike, stating that it gave an “unfair advantage.” The result: the Piranha never raced.

there are always new fun things to learn of, and Matias just sent me the link to the 1967 Ford Falcon Angostado of Argentina

Instead of chopping the roof in Argentina they just took a strip of body down the center. If you look the pics you will see a bar in the center of the windshield to hide the place where they cut the glass in half. Later cars had one piece windshields. The narrowed Falcons were an attempt to reduce the car's frontal section. They couldn't chop the roof like Moody did because the rule book said that the windshield had to keep the original car's angle and that the doors had to be the original height. Unfortunately for the people that wrote the rules they forgot to mention the roof in the rulebook... so the builders just took a section down the center of the car

Holman Moody made a Falcon with a shorter profile than a Porsche 356 of the day.


Holman Moody was no stranger to Ford, modifying T-Birds and Galaxies on the track. So, Ford approached H/M to build a fire-breathing monster from their new, little compact Falcon Challenger III.

To make the family car a little more slippery in the wind, they removed 3 inches horizontally from the center section of the body, and chopping the roof top another 3 inches, the small Falcon was a full 6 inches shorter than the factory Falcon. Adding the aluminum fastback to the car was the final piece to make the boxy compact slice through the air. 

 The Challenger III had a shorter profile than a Porsche 356 of the day.

someone just scored this factory rally pak equipped 1953 Saab for only £15,000


 Following the end of hostilities of WW2, SAAB realized that if it was to survive they needed to diversify. 

Unfortunately none of the company management had any experience in automotive engineering or manufacturing and neither had any of it's workforce ever employed in the industry. 

Except for one exception - a brilliant young engineer Gunnar Ljungstrom who together with an initial team of 15 set out to design a perfect people's car for Sweden. 

Only two of the team had drivers licenses!

Designed with aid of a wind tunnel, this car managed to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.30 which to this day stands as one of the most aerodynamic cars ever.


The special "Rally Pack" lights are clearly visible and take pride of place on the bodywork they are fully original and not replacement items. 

Headlights are "Robolight" originals which or course stands for Robert Bosch later to be branded by Bosch. Robo branded lights are a collector's items in their own right. 

The rear lights were famously taken from Saab's aviation parts bin and are glass wingtip lights from period aircraft models. 




This car is a Mk2 version being a 1953 model which retains early features such as split bumpers, trafficators, glass aviation rear lights, ornate door and window handles, early steering wheel and other unique features. It also features a period extra "Rally Pack" which was introduced in 1953 to celebrate and take advantage of international rally success. This consisted of tougher suspension and additional lights, including a prominent rooftop light just like 1952 Greta Molander's rally winning car.
