Walter used a unique FWD drive system using pinions and ring gears for the final drive. It was a great system but it did limit the turning radius which also accounts for the radical set back front axle which was used in an effort to shorten the wheel base and thus improve the turning radius.

It's not uncommon to come across one of these Jeep Wagoneers, but, I've never noticed these locking hubs before, on anything. They are named Dualmatic!

This 4×4 1954 IH was specially ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers for the Chief Engineers of the Minuteman Missile System in South Dakota. Just five were made, and three are known to survive.
