discovered in Cuba in 1996, the next 20 years were spent restoring this gullwing that was first bought and raced by the Cuban Minister of Public Works in the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix.

When the new government was established, Arroyo, who had also been the Cuban ambassador to the United States just a year earlier, moved off the island and settled in Washington D.C., selling the Benz to a Cuban race team in the process.

it passed through a couple owners who neglected it terribly, leaving it out in the rain and sun, and hurricanes, until thieves and rust had a bit of progress into making it far less than feasible to restore.

Then an Italian businessman discovered it, and spent 20 total years forcing the sale from an who owner didn’t even want to entertain the thought of selling.

Four years passed between first contact and refusal to sell, and then reconsidering, and agreeing to let the Italian buy a 50% stake in the car as a first step toward letting him own the whole shebang.

Another six years of negotiation followed, and when the handover was finally completed in 2006, it took six months to remove the various pieces of the car from their various resting places, and 10 years to ship them to Italy from Cuba

The overall restoration, including a full nut-and-bolt mechanical rebuild, took two years.

Would you pay a million for a 300 SL gullwing that hasn't been driven since 1984? The current owner hopes so, they haven't driven it, just storing it for a retirement fund. Pretty smart.

Bought him a gull wing Mercedes when he was 14, (he still has it, pictured above) he practiced, and bingo. Racing legend.

She was old money rich, and bought stock in Lime Rock, and then bought Sam a Formula Vee, and he was given special permission to race on test days, though he didn't meet the SCCA requirement of being 21 years old


 In 1967, he was the first driver to lap the 1.5-mile Lime Rock course in less than a minute.

She drove a Superbird to pick up the grand kids at school and drop them off.


By the way, Sam won an Emmy for sports writing, the 1982 Indy 500 commentary.

Finned Continental gull wing with a Lincoln 430 cu in... woody barnfind - "Fin and Tonic"

Found in a warehouse on a Olive plantation. Stored since 1972.

 A employee of the owner had filled the boat to the top for 2 weeks with water and forgot about it. The owner took the boat apart, dissembled the motor, removed the interior, and put into a container.

but as it was found in the below photo, really shows how incredible the condition of it was. Only had 148 run time hours, and had been in a barn from 1972 to 2013... 41 years

Ah.. the New York Times has a full explanation: In 1986, Daimler-Benz commissioned the pop artist Andy Warhol to make a series of paintings to celebrate the automaker’s centennial. The plan was for 80 works, and the subjects would be 20 of Daimler’s most important cars, including the Benz Patent Motorwagen of 1886, the first car ever built. But Warhol died on Feb. 22, 1987, of a heart attack shortly after gall bladder surgery. At the time of his death, he had completed only 35 silkscreens and 12 large-scale drawings. as an aside about Warhol, his Green Car Crash, sold for 71 million dollars in 2007. Yes, for a print, not a Ferrari GTO. 71 Million dollars. What the hell?

Well in Nov 2013 it sold for 105 million
Green Car Crash , created by Warhol and his newly-hired assistant Gerard Malanga in 1963 from an image taken by photographer John Whitehead and published in the June 3 issue of Newsweek.
Whitehead's shot captured the aftermath of the fiery conclusion of a police chase in Seattle. The car that had been pursued overturned at 60 m.p.h., ejecting its driver at a speed sufficient to impale his body on a climbing spike in a utility pole. (gruesome.. and printed in Newsweek?)
 Green Car Crash was the only Warhol "Burning Car" painting of five (all based on Whitehead's photograph) to utilize a color other than black and white.
 It had been privately held for 30 years and generated a tremendous amount of interest in potential buyers.

the annual Cruise for Kids, benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito, and it's the most comprehensive gathering of supercars outside of SEMA

it's all open to the public, and you can walk in to drool... be polite and don't drip on the cars... and you'll see most every expensive car made in the past 5 years. About 1/4 of the cars were Ferrari

the only place you'll ever see Bugatti on the public roads... seriously. I've photographed a dozen or so, and only at car shows or dealerships. No one drives a million dollar vehicle anywhere
