The Cisitalia Grand Prix, a single-seater car for the postwar 1.5-litre supercharged Grand Prix class, built by Italian sports car manufacturer Cisitalia and introduced in 1949. 

It was designed on behalf of Cisitalia by Porsche between 1946–47, and is therefore also known by its Porsche project number, Typ 360.

In the end of WW II, Pietro “Piero” Dusio founded a company called Compagnia Industriale Sportiva Italia, CISItalia in short, with the future plan to start the series production of racing and sports cars.

At the same time there was one Austrian-born former racer and self-taught engineer Karl Abarth living in Italy who wanted to work with racing machines as the war was over. He contacted Ferry Porsche. Abarth knew the Porsche family through his wife who used to be the secretary to Anton Piëch (husband of Ferdinand Porsche’s daughter and Ferry’s sister Louise). In Italy, Karl Abarth had became Carlo Abarth – a name every auto enthusiast knows. In the end of September 1946, Abarth became Porsche engineering company’s representative in Italy.

Today, let's remember that a bridge was measured in Smoots!


In 1958, as a freshman at MIT and Lambda Chi Alpha pledge, the fraternity pledgemaster hatched the idea to use the shortest — and most scientifically named pledge — to measure the bridge from Boston to Cambridge.

 Little did they know, however, that their activity would make its way into MIT, Boston and even Google lore. 

They also underestimated how difficult getting up and down 364.4 times (plus or minus an ear) would be. "I don't think any of us had the slightest idea how much work was involved with lying down, getting up," he said. "They had to help me a great way across the bridge. I started by doing a push-up, and then I couldn't even do that. It deteriorated from there."




In 1958, a group of MIT students measured the Massachusetts Ave. Bridge in “smoots,” a now accepted unit of measurement named for the 5-foot, 7-inch Oliver R. Smoot Jr. ’62, who famously laid down hundreds of times across the span one storied night as his peers painted markers across the bridge, totaling 364.4 smoots


On April 4, an MIT team set out on a similar journey across the Charles River to pull off a new “hack,” this time measuring the Longfellow Bridge in “kleins.” This new measurement is named after Smoot’s classmate Martin Klein ’62. One klein (4 feet, 9.5 inches) is equal to 0.85820896 smoots. 

The expedition was undertaken in honor of both Smoot and the 85th birthday of Klein. 

Known as the father of commercial side-scan sonar, Klein serves on the MIT Sea Grant Advisory Board and the MIT Museum Collections Committee. His sonar technology has been used worldwide to help locate countless famous shipwrecks, including the Titanic, the World War I ocean liner RMS Lusitania, and the treasure-laden Nuestra Señora de Atocha. 

Appropriately, the MIT team used a “side-scan” method to survey the Longfellow Bridge.

Reclined on a custom-engineered wooden cart topped with a mission-specific chaise lounge pillow, Klein himself acted as the official observation device — by looking to the sides — as the team pulled him along the bridge.

the Northern Pacific train wreck on the "S" trestle 7 miles above Mullan, Idaho, on February 10, 1903.


An avalanche had taken out a sizable section of the trestle just hours after the train with a rotary snow plow stopped partly on the trestle so the crew could rest. Ironically, they had stopped on the end of the trestle to avoid the train being buried in an avalanche. A helper locomotive with tender and a caboose on the back of the train on the trestle were hurled over 75 feet into the gulch below, while a passenger car hung precariously over the chasm. Amazingly, nobody was killed. The injured NP personnel were hauled to the hospital in Wallace by hand sleigh. NP engine no. 396, a Baldwin manufactured E-Class 4-6-0, it's tender, and the caboose were a total loss.

new to me ads for Phillips 66 (now has me wondering... what is the 66 representing?) And Steve has the answer! The story the museum tells is that the car testing the Phillips gas did 66 miles per hour while running on Route 66.





Phillips Petroleum Company was started in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1917 by brothers Lee and Frank Phillips. 

 Route 66 opened in 1926. The first Phillips 66 station opened in November 1927 - bulk sales before that. 

By the end of December they had four stations up and running. The story the museum tells goes that the car testing the gas did 66 miles per hour while running on Route 66.

The stated reason in 1927 didn't mention a car testing gas on Route 66 - it was the API gravity value of their aviation fuel (by 1932 it was up to 69.6).

Their logo didn't change to look like the Route 66 signs until around August 1930. 

As an aside, Phillips 66 was the name of Bartlesville's very successful A.A.U. league basketball team.

A waterfront train depot dripping in history is about to get a facelift and new historical exhibit



Situated at Depot Beach on the shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, the depot is a treasured historic building and a driver behind the town’s transformation from a small fishing and lumber settlement to the resort destination it is today

The first train arrived in Charlevoix during June 1892 with depot being completed the following month.

the "Old Brick Road", found deep in the scrub forest of Flagler County.


This nine-mile stretch of brick road that looks like it belongs in another century...because it does! Locally known as the "Old Brick Road," this bumpy, red-brick path was part of the original Dixie Highway, a massive 1915 project meant to connect Chicago all the way to Miami.

the house has two things in common with the car, both are 1955s, and both are enamel on steel panels.


After WWII, we needed houses fast. The answer was steel.

The Lustron was a prefabricated house made of enameled steel panels.

It was delivered on a truck. You could clean the walls with a garden hose. You hung pictures with magnets.

They were rust-proof and termite-proof.

Western Union had a timekeepers railcar to maintain the massive telegraph infrastructure that ran along railroad tracks. Starting around 1914, Western Union established specialized cars, often converted from old Pullman coaches, to serve as foreman/bunk and kitchen/dining cars for their crews.


 A traveling watch repairman was using this rail car to travel the line stopping at stations and terminals to fix employee watches and station clocks.

In 1877 Western Union first received time signals via telegraph form the US. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. after  hiring a clockmaker to transmit U.S. Naval Observatory time on the hour over the company’s network.

 A system sent signals over the telegraph lines several minutes before each hour of the day, followed by a pause and finally a last “click” directly on the hour. Every hour, on the hour, minute hands on clocks across the nation would snap to “12”, ensuring accurate, standardized time everywhere.


Stations clocks received that signal from the railroad head quarters from the master telegraph clock, keeping station clocks on calibrated time for each time zone.

The station manager would make adjustments to the other clocks and watches as needed and document the adjustments. The traveling time piece keeper stopped to maintain the clocks to keep them oiled and running perfectly, and serviced railroad employee pocket watches as well.

Yard masters and station masters collected broken watches and got them fixed or exchanged  when the Western Union timekeepers car stopped.

hand painted Mini pick up, inspired by the 303 squadron, the most successful fighter squadron, consisting of 95% Polish pilots, in the Battle of Britain (thank you Shas!)


Shas corrected my post, with some accurate facts (thank you Shas!) 

the non polish  members of the 303 were flight commander John Kent, a Canadian from Winnipeg serving in the RAF, and Josef František a bit eccentric Czech pilot that entered Polish service after the III Reich annexed Czechoslovakia and he fought with the 303rd to his end in a crash near Cuddington Way. At that time he was number 4 top ace pilot in all allied forces.

"Hold My Beer and Watch This" was invented in 1986 when a fan attended the 1986 Winston 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway and took the pace car on a joy ride. He was chased for two laps before being stopping for state troopers by the track crew



It was the track officials who ultimately caught the pace car thief. They set up a roadblock on the track, forcing the guy to slow and stop. Once he did, they pulled Crowder out of the vehicle just as police pulled up.

ever heard of the Epsom Salts Monorail in the Owlshead Mountains near Death Valley? In 1922 a Los Angeles florist built a 28-mile monorail to carry hydrated magnesium sulphate to San Bernadino, things didn't work out






Far down on the southwestern side of Death Valley in the hilly area around the Wingate Wash there is a huge deposit of Epsom salts, a glittering field of white forming a perfect contrast with the soft colors of the surrounding hills.

It was shoveled into bags, and transported to the Trona Railway


Thomas Wright was a florist from Los Angeles set up a camp in Crystal Hills Wash in 1918 and prepared an area for salt mining where he had previously found some minerals.

He and his team decided to build a monorail on wooden trestles because building a narrow-gauge railway line was considered to be too expensive.

Mr. Wright and his team began construction of monorail track from freshly logged Douglas firs in 1922 and finished in 1924

The first locomotive was battery operated but it wasn’t powerful enough to pull loaded trains therefore, 7 conventional Fordson tractors and one Buda tractor were modified to build articulated monorail locomotives. 

The brakes were only installed on the locomotive which caused reoccurring problems; each locomotive could carry a maximum of 3400 pounds while the carriages could carry 8500 pounds each. 

The maximum downhill speed was 35 MPH and in the flat area, 30 mph could be reached; normal operating speed was eight MPH on the uphill and up to 15 MPH in the flat area.

It transported less salt than originally estimated within the first two years of its use. 

The mine employed 12–15 workers in 1924/25. The epsomite could initially be scraped from the surface using gardener's tools, but the high-quality minerals were quickly depleted, and the remainder was mixed with 50% contaminants of sand, debris and other salts.

It closed operations and was out of business in 1926

The largest part of the monorail is now in a restricted area of the China Lake Naval Weapons Center "B" Range. The mine, however, is inside the Death Valley National Park
