I attended an industrial trade show in Tokyo one time where a chrome plating company had a booth. On display was a landing gear component from a WWII Japanese fighter that had been underwater since the plane had been shot down in combat. The display boasted that the chrome plating was in perfect condition even after being submerged in saltwater for over 50 years. "Gosh," I exclaimed, "What was it doing in the water in the first place?" My wife told me to shut up.
