Skip the first 3:30 then wonder how long it would take to walk out if your plane wasn't able to take off again and the radio wouldn't reach anyone.

Second video is better quality and resolution, go for at least 1440, skip the 1st minute

an undeveloped landing area in Idaho, Dewey Moore is perhaps the most notorious airstrip in the legendary bush pilot's paradise known as the "Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness" on Big Creek in Idaho, about 19-miles west of the junction of Big Creek and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

This strip is rated as the second most difficult strip in "Fly Idaho".

Many planes have wrecked on this tricky little 700' landing strip. There is even an effort to close it down by 4 groups (No doubt headed by Karen's) that have sued the Forest Service

The groups — Wilderness Watch, Great Old Broads (told ya so, Karen's by the dozen) for Wilderness, Friends of the Bitterroot and Friends of the Clearwater — claim that Forest Service records dating back decades, including through the establishment of the wilderness area, confirm that the four dirt-and-grass landing strips were abandoned and that it is expressly illegal for aviators to use them.

But the Forest Service has for years engaged in an informal policy of not enforcing the prohibition on the strips' use, the lawsuit states. And in 2018, the agency implemented what the groups describe as an illegal policy of opening the landing strips to airplane traffic and planning formal maintenance on them, the lawsuit claims, all without environmental review or public notice. In 2022 and at the request of the state of Idaho, the Forest Service illegally cut down tall trees to improve the approach to one landing strip, the groups allege.

George Nickas, executive director of Wilderness Watch, wrote, "The Wilderness Act makes clear that the Forest Service must protect the wilderness character of the River of No Return, and it makes particularly clear that aircraft landings and other motorized activity are allowed only under narrowly defined conditions. The Big Creek Four airstrips were not in regular use at the time of wilderness designation in 1980, and they have never been lawful airstrips open to any public use. Establishing four more landing strips in the Big Creek drainage just chokes this spectacular area with incessant airplane traffic."

These groups are all about preventing anything with a spark plug anywhere near the wilderness.... so that? Hell if I know, if you can't get to the wilderness, then, what's the point of having one? Getting to it, experiencing the wilderness, the solitude, is the reason that they're WORTH seeing. It's WHY there's a national hiking trail, national parks, etc etc.

As you can see from this off season photo, there is a stream of rain run off that created this airfield, and that run off will likely cause the stream's bed to get very rough

thanks Marc!

Jeremy Clarkson has shared the one key reason why he is unable to offer jobs at his Cotswolds farm to some teenagers. They don't have a car to get to work

a trend that Clarkson has noticed among the teens applying for jobs, is that many haven't learned to drive.

Clarkson revealed the "one thing in common" most applicants have is that they haven't passed their driving test..

"So how are they going to get to and from the farm when it’s three in the morning and a pig is dying? Or it’s 10pm and we’ve just decided to plough one more field before calling it a day?"

Clarkson went on to question why this trend among the younger generation has come into existence, putting it down to the fact that many view cars as a "unnecessary expense".

"I know of no young person who thinks a car might be 'fun'. Or that speed is exciting... Nor do they see a car as a symbol of freedom. They see it as a tool. And, worse, a tool they can do without."

Clarkson's complaint comes just days after he explained the list of requirements he looks for from applicants in a social media post.

One fan said they'd take like to work at his farm, which prompted Clarkson to reply: "If you would work fucking hard and be prepared to put your whole arm in a cow, and never moan, we’d take you."

He also told another fan: "The shop is always on the look out for bright, chatty people. We don’t care about qualifications. Just be fun."

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized at news conference in Tokyo, yesterday for massive cheating on certification tests for seven models as Toyota suspended production of three of them

The wide-ranging fraudulent testing at Japan’s top automaker involved the use of inadequate or outdated data in collision tests, and incorrect testing of airbag inflation and rear-seat damage in crashes. Engine power tests were also found to have been falsified.

Toyota suspended production in the country of the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio and Yaris Cross. The deceptive tests were also found on discontinued models.

I'm shocked that after the 2009 death in Santee, that Toyota risked ANY thing that might result in bad publicity

Caltrans has worked since January 2023 to remove material that spilled onto the highway at Paul’s Slide during a major storm, but will reopen next month

But the Central Coast highway that connects Carmel to Cambria won’t fully reopen yet.

Parnelli died today. Last of the bullring ironmen racers. Winner of the Indy 500 as a driver and team owner, 100 jalopy races, the Motor Trend Riverside 500 and 4 other USAC stock car races, the 1970 Trans Am championship, Pikes Peak, 4 sprint car championships, Baja 1000 and Baja 500 in the Big Oly, member of 8 Hall of Fames. He retired over 50 years ago from driving... but he's going to be legend forever.

Indy 500 winner Rodger Ward, once said: “Parnelli Jones was the most talented race car driver I have ever raced against.”

Robin Miller said it best: U.S. motorsport’s Mount Rushmore would feature A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney and Parnelli.

Parnelli was among those elite sports stars Shaq, Fangio, Stirling, and Shelby, etc who require only one name for everyone to know the subject of the conversation. There is only one Parnelli, and yes, he was the all-time leader of the Broke While Leading category. But winners are often the ones pushing their equipment the hardest

But Parnelli wasn't really his name, he was born Rufus Parnell Jones. And he raced a car called Ol Calhoun! That's cool, very cool, to THIS car guy!

He grew up poor—and poorly educated—and did a long, painful apprenticeship running jalopies on Southern California bullrings. Yet despite racing during what was statistically the most dangerous era in motorsports history, he was never seriously injured, and he ended up as one of the wealthiest drivers in the world.

Parnelli was the first driver at Indy to ever qualify over 150 miles per hour in 1962 and participated in the Baja 1000, raced midget cars, stock cars, sprint cars, ORVs and more during his career.

the best write up of Parnelli is at https://racer.com/2024/06/04/parnelli-jones-1933-2024

Coolest thing I've seen today

Documentary about Danny Ongais

Some people made a documentary of Isky... problem is, they have no distribution, so... there's no way to see it. Then, what's the damn point of making it if no one can see your movie?

If this forum (blogger) won't play the preview, then go to https://www.iskythedocumentary.com/
obviously, the makers will not allow it on You Tube due to copyrights legalities

https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a60884257/ed-iskenderian-documentary-isky  read this article, it has Isky telling some stories you've never heard before

There are a lot of movies like this that I've posted about over the years. Some passion project that isn't' released in any way that anyone can access. Whatever the goal is, I'm not aware of what that could be beyond getting the info recorded before the subjects die. How these movies ever recoup the expenses of recording? No idea.

Why isn't there a film festival with these? Again, no idea. There are enough car conventions where the target audience gathers in large enough numbers, that after the day's races, or convention hall closes (SEMA closes at 5, most others probably are the same) that the movies could be shown, or tickets sold to recoup the movie making expenses

Did you know Jerry Titus, in addition to racing Pontiacs, and finishing 3rd overall at the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours, was a graduate of the Julliard School of Music?

Ever watch the cool hydroplane movie (was there ever more than one?) Madison, starring Jim Caviezel and Bruce Dern? Here's the hydroplane they snagged the engine out of the static display WW2 fighter plane for

the movie was made in 2001, about the 1971 Madison Illinois regatta.

There are some other recognizable actors, like Jake Lloyd, famous for his role as Anakin Skywalker, and Paul Dooley, emmy winner with 217 roles and you'll know him but not where you know him from. Consider that Sam Jackson has only 216 roles.... that's how much these guys were EVERYWHERE in shows and movies

Anyway, the movie Madison,  is abou the APBA hydroplane racing in the 1970s, based on a true story. It stars Jim Caviezel as a driver who comes out of retirement to lead the Madison, Indiana, community-owned racing team.

After an accident ends his career as a hydroplane pilot, Jim McCormick settles into life as an air-conditioner mechanic, husband and father in a Midwestern town.

The population of Madison, Ind., is about 12k, but it has been a fixture of national powerboat racing for decades, but the piston engine era was over and the jet turbine engine era was beginning. With life in the town being bleak enough as is, Jim, with the blessing of his wife and son, enters the 1971 Gold Cup hydroplane race.

Madison, Indiana, on the Ohio River, has sponsored powerboat racing since 1911 and began holding an annual race called the Madison Regatta in 1929.

Beginning in 1954, the annual July race became affiliated with the American Power Boat Association. Though Madison has a population of only 12,000, the Regatta maintains its place in the Unlimited hydroplane American Boat Racing Association series, whose other races are in Seattle, Kennewick, Detroit, and San Diego

I don't recall if I ever dove into why the hell Ford named a car, AND a van, a Falcon.

But we all are aware they are repeating that idiocy with the Mustang car and suv. Effing stupid.

1970s glory right here... these used to be seen at every campground, lake, concert, nascar race, etc etc

The truck is a 1968 Chevy C20 CST Custom Camper with a 396. The 3/4-ton pickup is a Golden Anniversary edition that was ordered new through a Denver dealership and stayed within the family for almost 50 years. Then it sold for 50k.

When purchased by the current owner in 2023, a period-correct 1966 Del Rey Sky Lounger Camper was fitted on the truck and is included in the sale.

interesting bit of parts trivia, Plymouth A bodies from 63 to 65, used trunk hinges (torsion bar springs) on the hood to free up space

I learned about this, as it's not something I've spent any time working on or thinking about, from Vice Grip Garage's guy who went to Florida to buy a 65 Barracuda, and spent many days in the hot and humid weather trying to get this car on the road under it's own power (in order to get traffic to his You Tube I suppose) instead of simply getting it towed home instantly and working on it in comfort, at home, in his own garage on his lift (I figure he must have one) and he pointed out the trivia about the hood hinge design at minute 17:26 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VociPiFBMj0

I guess, I can't blame them for trying!
