5 years and lots of guesses, and I finally figured out what Alex and Sandy's ol buggy is. A 1902 or 3 Spaulding

I came across a bunch of these buggies in an online series 1903-1923 Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal recently, and sent them my latest in 5 years of occasional guesses, and at last the mystery is solved!

Perseverance!

  1. Sorry guys, but Alex & Sandy's ol' buggy is NOT a Spaulding. The Spaulding co made a carbon copy of the Curved Dash Olds mechanically with a slightly different body for about a year, until they were sued into oblivion by Ransom E. Olds for Patent infringement. To see a real Spaulding look up 1902 Northern Automobile under Wikipedia, that guy has a Spaulding but thinks its a Northern. Spaulding evidently made both side and center tiller if you look at their original ads from 1902-03. This thing is likely a one-off automobile made from a buggy in the dawn of the last century, as was quite common in that time. Every small town tinkerer was getting into the act, trying to create their own version of the automobile, and this is quite likely one of those. Get it running and go have fun! Jeff
