The cool details of engines

I've never seen Shelby heads before

The pins/rivets, are going to keep those freeze plugs firmly in place

There is a beauty to machined parts

That is a cool procedure, having just a pair of engine builders at most make your engine, and then they put their name on it. That's pride in the work friends.

To: Annonymous... who wants to sell his resto mod to Ron Pratte

I don't have the attention, connection, or access to Ron Pratte.

If Ron were to ever contact me, I wouldn't give out his contact info unless it were public knowledge, like a (business) address, email, or phone #.

If I had acess to Ron, I'd have a photo gallery of his car collection up here so fast I'd burn up my wifi connection.

Sorry, if you are trying to interest Ron Pratte in your resto mod.... it's my advice to give that up, and just auction your vehicle at Barrett Jackson. If your resto mod is interesting to other people, it'll sell... won't it!

Always get a second opinion about car repairs, and never go to any shop that doesn't come recommended by a trusted car guy... I saved Mick $2500

Mick called me up one afternoon a couple weeks ago telling me that the BMW dealership told him the 2004 Mini was soon going to need a new clutch, and it had a cracked radiator, a blown head gasket... and would cost about 3500 to repair. Nothing was under warranty.

I told Mick to ditch the dealership, go to the PRO in transmissions... Don Wang, DRW transmissions http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2007/04/not-just-transmission-mechanic-dons-gn.html

Mick was treated to an honest mechanic for a change, and they set him straight. The head gasket did need to be replaced... and the trans in the Mini was fine. The guy who took it for a test run told Mick, "I'm gonna be hard on it, that is what it takes to feel it out, and see how it responds... if it feels bad, we'll know it's ready to be replaced."
It responded like a pampered trans with many years of life left.

Score one for honest mechanics, and DRW transmissions.

San Diego Auto Museum hot rod exhibit..

If I had a bull dozer....

Handmade Ranchero from a Ford Galaxy!

I was blown away at loading a race car onto a Ranchero... seriously, that is too much weight for a passanger car to handle, carry, and brake competantly. But then add the trailer weight! Doom!

But Nik pointed out that the hauler is a custom chopped Galaxy, and I'm hoping that the customizer went over the top for new brakes to handle all that extra load!

... trailers and motor homes produced by Turiscar, whose images have been sent by great friends who collaborate with our humble space ...
The photo is of a trailer Brilliant, and so taken in 1967, so this trailer is the first series produced by Turiscar, and was owned by the great racing driver and organizer of the Rio Ricardo Achcar.
He told me an interesting fact: the trailer was used not only as his residence in times of races, but also served as an office for his "traveling school of driving", which was very successful at the end of the 60s and early 70s.
Look only in the strange tug of vehicle trailer in the photo below: Galaxie was adapted into a truck only to lead to his Formula autodrome, and tow the Brilliant!

Classic vs Vintage... what is the difference?

"Nitpicker" decided to attempt to correct the verbage I used in the next post. I say those stickers are "Vintage". He thinks I'd be more accurate if I said they were (in his opinion) "Classic".

I always defer to Websters American dictionary of the English language, particularyly my 1948 published edition. But that is boxed away in storage. So I will defer to Dictionary.com

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/vintage numbers 6 and 9 are the ones that are general in nature, and not relating to wine, so:
6. the class of a dated object with reference to era of production or use: a hat of last year's vintage. –adjective
9. representing the high quality of a past time: vintage cars; vintage movies.

And then a bit farther down: Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.

The word Classic : of or pertaining to automobiles distinguished by elegant styling, outstanding engineering, and fine workmanship that were built between about 1925 and 1948.

So... now what? Both defintions are relevant, and seem to be equally pertinant.

So, Nitpicker... seems like a draw, but it's my post, and I like the word Vintage due to my understanding of the relevancy to the time period of an item, and the word Classic has become more related to the era of cars, not the items associated with those cars.

Thanks for reading and enjoying the website, if that's my worst semantics error... I'm doing pretty good!

Interesting photos from a Brazilian website

The Challenger was up for public auction in Brazil, see the link at the end of this post for the whole story, about page 9 or so.
How? How do you load that racecar onto the back of that Ranchero? Well, you probably caught what I missed.. Nik had to help me out... there are four doors on that hauler. Yeah! Now as if it isn't a leap of intuition enough to figure out how it was loaded on the back of that Ford Galaxy... the whole idea just got a big twist when you know that is a chopped four door!

I've seen the above in San Diego, I think
Check out http://colunistas.ig.com.br/flaviogomes/ for some more interesting stuff, or just enjoy his series of photos, Girls and Cars. Good stuff!

Best of the LaJolla Motor Car Classic that I haven't yet posted

In a big hurry to pass in a blind turn

what can be the hurry? the streets are way to busy for this sort of stupidity right near a big car show.

SAAB station wagon

Found near the LaJolla Motor Car Classic... I've never seen one before... and that is about all it takes somedays to get me interested.

So you jump your motorcycle onto a building... big deal. Want to impress me? Jump off it... and he did!

Robbie Maddison, who has taken over the informal motorcycle jumping crown that Evel Knievel once held, leaped a world-record 322 feet, seven inches in Las Vegas on New Years Eve.

Thanks Mike!
