3 "Going Thing" Mustangs were at the 2018 Cobra Jet Reunion

Painted Petty Blue to commemorate Richard Petty’s one-year NASCAR contract with Ford, Torbinski’s ultrarare 428 CJ (with Top Loader four-speed and 4.30:1 9-inch rear) is slated for a full restoration in early 2019.

The Going Thing: special-edition 1969 Ford Mustang sports roof, a Special-Edition Ford Drag Team lookalike

All of us have seen Mustang special editions, such as Twister Specials, California Specials, High Country Specials, or even something as esoteric as a Mustang E

Ford built scores of different special-edition Mustangs throughout the years, but after more than 30 years of photographing Mustangs, this ’69 is the first special promotion known as The Going Thing I've heard of.

This car is extra special for a couple reasons. Original owner, and a 428 Cobra Jet under its hood, and a shaker scoop. Of the 109 Going Thing Mustangs, this was the only 428 with shaker scoop, and bonus, it's a 4 speed. Only 22 of them received 428s.

Oh, and it's Petty Blue, as this was the one year Petty was with Ford

Throughout the sixties, Ford offered plenty of national, regional, and local promotions for the Mustang.

The 1968 California Special and 1970 Twister Special are perhaps the most familiar, but The Going Thing is a bit more enigmatic.

If that name sounds familiar, it’s because The Going Thing was Ford’s national advertising campaign for the 1969-1970 model year. Ford’s advertising agency even commissioned a “Sunshine Pop” group (naturally christened “The Going Thing” and organized by the same team that later handled The Partridge Family) as support for the campaign, which included three LP releases.

The 1969 Limited Edition Mustang E, a car I've never heard of until now. Not to be confused the the "4.1 Liter Special" though they are both 1969 Mustangs with a 4.1l engine

While 1969-model-year cars were offered with a wide selection of V8s engines, ranging from 289 to 427 displacements, the Mustang E got its juice from a 4.1-liter 250 ci inline-six called the "Thriftpower"

Although it wasn’t the first six-cylinder available in the Mustang, the 250 incher was new for 1969 and came with a three-speed automatic (the C-4) equipped with a high stall torque converter and a high 2.33:1 rear axle ratio.

Output was rated at 155 hp and 240 ft lbs, identical to the standard six-cylinder, but the torque converter and revised ratio made it significantly slower.

Styling-wise, nothing set this car apart from the standard model except for the “Mustang E” letter on the quarter panels. Inside, it was again identical to the regular pony, but it didn’t have air conditioning

About 50 were produced. Ironically, this makes the Mustang E one of the rarest Mustangs ever built, more so since many have been converted to Mach 1 replicas.

The 1969 Mustang E is remarkable not only for its rarity, but also for the way it anticipated by more than four years the oil crisis of 1973

the "4.1 Liter Special" had about 150 made according to the Marti report, for the Indiana district under 6 different DSO#s.

There were coupes and fastbacks. The cars were produced in 3 different colors, Green (WT7034), Orange (WT5108) and Yellow (WT# unknown). 25 cars were produced under each DSO# with each car under each DSO# being painted the same color.

It is known that each of the 150 cars was equiped with the following: 250-1V I-6 Engine
C4 Transmission
2.79 Rear End gears
Sports Appearance Group (aka Non-functional Hood Scoop)
Dual Sports Mirrors (black on the orange cars, white on the green cars, yellow is unknown).
Tape Stripe (white-gold-white)
E78x14 white wall tires
Standard hubcaps
AM radio

Ford celebrated the 1972 Summer Olympics with a special limited-edition red-white-and-blue Sprint package for the Mustang, Maverick, and Pinto.

The Sprint Décor Group option was conceived to jumpstart sagging sales during one of the Mustang’s worst sales years. The package was one of the most striking in the marque’s history, which made it a popular seller.

50 of the 1972 Mustang Sprint convertible were produced and shipped to the Washington, D.C., sales district for the annual Cherry Blossom Parade.

"Branded" Mustang special

Ford offered a dealer installed package called “Branded Mustang” in 1968 with patterned tops similar to the Mopar Mod Tops. There were two kits available, one for ’65-66 and one for ’67-68.

Branded edition Mustangs were created by dealerships on mostly used 65-68 Mustangs to spiff them up for resale. The Branding kit was available from Ford. The kit included choice of colored vinyl tops (in 15 colors), side stripes (in 5 colors), quarter panel chrome, and special Branded emblems.

the vinyl tops could be in four patterns - Paisley, Sculptured, Tweed, or Leather. They also came in 15 different colors. Or you could get just white or black. The stripes came in five different colors.

http://www.mustangandfords.com/featured-vehicles/mump-1212-brand-marketing-1967-mustang/photo-gallery/#9

The Branded Mustang Kit was used by dealers on new and used Mustang coupes and was distributed by DSI Corp., Plymouth, Mich. directly to Ford Dealers.

It consisted of:
 1. Pre-cut, hand-sewn vinyl top - 15 different colors or patterns
2. Two black and brass or silver and black C-pillar emblems - marked left and right
 3. Left and right Screw-On quarter moldings - with Ford part numbers
4. Pre-cut "Thoroughbred" stripes in five colors (Red, white, black, blue, gold)
5. Two cans of Mastic glue
6. Ford instruction guide

This all came in a 3 foot long shipping tube from DSI.

The tops are all different and range from 'pretty cool' to 'butt ugly'.
There also is a thoroughbred stripe identification chart.

"Going Thing" special edition Mustang

made as a tribute to the Ford Drag Racing Team Mustangs, these were 103 special edition Mustangs I've never seen or heard of before. This one was brought to the 2014 Amelia Island Concours

Can you believe I just learned of special edition Mustangs I've previously never heard of? "Millionth Anniversary Gold", and the "Gold Nugget Special"

About 50 were made in 1966, maybe 5 still exist. They were not much more than a hard top with a 289, pony interior, and special gold paint.

This car was in two magazines: The June 2009 issue of Cars and Parts, and the July 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly. The original owner says this car was the first unit produced, and that it had been on promotional display as Metke Ford in Bellevue Washington. 'Treasure Chest' keys were mailed to area residents - inside the dealership's chest were keys to the Gold Mustang.

The owner's father-in-law stopped by the Ford place while his wife went shopping for a dress: the car was his. The whole story was told in the Seattle Times and Seattle Post Intelligencer. It has been in storage since 1985 by the original owner, then sold in 1994

Found on http://mustangattitude.com/cgi-bin/picsearch.cgi?modl=All&year=1966&cond=All&excl=anniversary+gold&incl=All&roof=All&rfcl=All&ownr=All&emai=All&loca=All&vinn=All&post=All&sett=All&show=All&smod=anniversary&comm=&page=1

there were some more that I've never heard of before, but you might not be interested in them, they were really nothing but special paint colors;
Black Hills Gold was a special color for the January 1968, Color of the Month promotion rumored to be in the Denver area only with cars special ordered from the San Jose factory. Although we have identified other Black Hills Gold and other Color of the Month Mustangs built at other factories and sent across the nation. The Color of the Month was a promotion for the first four months of 1968, where special colors were connected to main holidays for special sales: Black Hills Gold paint for the New Year celebration in January, Passionate Pink for Valentine's day in February, Emerald Green for St. Patrick's day in March, and Eastertime Coral for Easter in April.

Spanish Gold was one of 13 special order colors available for the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion running from 1968 through 1969. This promotion offered new Mustang owners optional upgrades and special colors such as
Madagascar Orange,
Whipped Cream,
Spanish Gold,
Dandelion Yellow,
Hot Pink,
Caribbean Coral,
Forest Green,
Sierra Blue, and Moss Green.

All Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustangs were built in San Jose (VIN starting with 8R or 9R) and ordered in the Los Angeles (DSO 71) or San Jose (DSO 72) area.
