ever hear about Burnside skatepark in Portland?
Back in 1990, motivated by the lack of parks in the area, a renegade group of skaters focused their creative energy into pouring concrete under a bridge in a neglected part of Portland, constructing a renegade three-foot-tall by three-foot-wide bank against a slanted wall under the Burnside Bridge.
There was garbage and graffiti everywhere, so the skateboarders started cleaning it up and introducing themselves to local business owners. Ultimately, the skaters persuaded city officials to let them keep building because they turned an eyesore into an attraction.
Over the following years, that initial undertaking eventually evolved into a 10,000-square-foot legit park, arguably the most famous DIY project in the world. It also spawned a modern concrete skatepark revolution that became prevalent in the North-western U.S and beyond.
To say Portland’s concrete park scene has evolved quite a bit since that first lump of concrete was shaped in 1990 is obviously an understatement. And that evolution sparked what is currently one of the strongest riding scenes in the country, as Shad elaborates: “When I first moved here in the early 90s, there were like ten dudes who rode. Now there are hundreds.”
While Portland has many attributes that contributed to the abundance of riders, one significant reason is access to the many concrete parks all over the area. With fifteen more slated to be built in the Portland area, and an additional five alone in Vancouver, Washington in the next ten years, Portland will be even more of a cement transition Mecca.

Poof, and just like that, it was gone. (Red Bull Global Rallycross)
Red Bull Global Rallycross has ceased operations for the 2018 season and the Red Bull-sponsored short-course rally sanctioning body told tracks on Tuesday that it would not promote events this season, ending a tumultuous offseason for the Colin Dyne-owned entity.
Red Bull Global Rallycross (official abbreviation Red Bull GRC) was a self-owned rallycross series run in the United States. Started as Global RallyCross Championship in 2009 by Brian Gale and Chip Pankow, the series transitioned ownership in 2013 to Colin Dyne. Broadcast live on NBC since 2014, the series was the fastest growing form of motor sport in the United States.
Not to worry, the organizers of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, announced a new series called Americas Rallycross (ARX), which will debut with a four-round season this year. ARX has already attracted big-name teams like Andretti Autosport, Subaru Rally Team USA, and Ken Block's Hoonigan away from GRC.

100 modified cars on a LA parking garage for a musical note, involving the cars’ stereo systems, horns, engines, and other noise-producing accessories
“A (for 100 Cars)” was, by turns, a placid deliberation, a thunderous roar, an ambitious lark. A public sound art installation made possible through corporate largess — the performance was part of the first Los Angeles edition of the Red Bull Music Academy festival — it turned negative space in the center of downtown Los Angeles into a sublime womb. All around, tall buildings loomed, while on the performance stage, 100 cars worked
On the roof of a parking lot across the street from Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Hall, many with their doors open and angled up to the sky. You could listen to the sometimes sharp, sometimes guttural tones that were pealing from their speakers, each a variation on the standard tuning of the note A.
Mr. Ikeda’s composition wasn’t limited to the stereo systems; it also took advantage of the cars’ headlights, horns and roaring engines.
Though in the case of one car, the revving proved to be too much, and a Cadillac DeVille began billowing out smoke from under its hood: Clamps securing a hose to the radiator had blown off.

on the last corner before the finish of the rally stage, and you slide off the road, into a parking lot... whoa!
Kris Meeke won Guanajuato Rally Mexico on Sunday despite almost throwing victory away when he crashed off the road into a spectator car park less than a kilometre from the finish.
But just 750 metres from the end of the four-day event, a mistake plunged his Citroën C3 through a hedge and into a spectator car park.
A disoriented Meeke drove around parked vehicles urgently searching for a way back onto the road. He eventually spied a hole in the hedge, regained the track and limped to the finish with a puncture and fan safety tape trailing from his car.
The clocks showed the Northern Irishman had won by 13.8sec, ending a miserable start to the season for Meeke and his Citroën team. It was their first success of the year and Meeke leaped to sixth in the FIA World Rally Championship points.
“I got caught out on a bump after the jump at a fast right corner,” said Meeke. “I’m a lucky boy. That’s certainly one way to finish a rally and I didn’t need that.
“I was desperately trying to trying to find my way out of the parked cars and find a gap in the hedge.
A lot of things went my way… ” he added.
