for nearly 33 years someone has been storing this useless car... why? It's not a collectible, not an investment piece, not even legally allowed to drive (factory non op) and they've never done a thing with it

and it's on ebay for sale at 3500 British pounds.

It would be a fantastic parts car, but, who really has an old Astra that wants to keep in instead of getting a newer car?

frankly, they are asking too damn much for it.

Jeff Dunham bought the Hard Hat Hauler and had Dave Shuten at Galpin Auto Sports restore it

Evidently this Barris creation came to life in 1971 from a 1/25th scale model, and features a triple blown "500hp" Chrysler Hemi engine, hand made headers, Cragar wheels, and 15" rear Goodyear slicks. The front has a working fork lift mounted ahead of the front axle.

it was up on Ebay in 2014 for about 10 thou http://oppositelock.kinja.com/found-on-ebay-george-barris-hard-hat-hauler-1503880108

somewhat changed and not kept up to it's original show car looks

This unique hot rod concept was brought to life size by Bob Larivee of Promotions Incorporated and  Barris Kustom Industries.

Designed by Harry Bradly, this originated as a 1⁄25th scale model kit and then duplicated in replica to a full size operable car. The concept of the American Hard Hat worker was incorporated into a combo T bucket - forklift.

Race Car Specialties of Tarzana, were commissioned to perform the machine work and construction of the chassis and torsion bar suspension. Carrera coiled 50/50 shocks were used on the rear frame center mount, and dual air shocks were installed on the front end.

A 23-T Roadster fiberglass lightweight body and turtle deck were channeled over the frame 4 inches in front and three inches in the rear. Vertical steering was installed with a Corvair box and Ansen red metal flake steering wheel.

Three 671 blowers with Cragar drives are stacked on the engine with an Enderly Fuel injection air scoop. All engine accessories and decorative chrome ornaments are provided by Cal Custom Accessories. Stewart Warner dials and gauges were used in the embossed aluminum firewall.

A lunch box case houses a Moon gas tank and battery. Extra wide reversed front and rear wheels were engineered by Cragar, then face plates have character artist renditions of Kennedy, Muskey, Agnew and Reagan mounted as hubcaps.

the 1971 Rapid Transit System Road Runner show car... has a strange colored set of taillights, but there was a good reason

The light would light up green when accelerating, yellow when the gas pedal was released, and red when the brake pedal was pushed

The Wine Wagon, another of the goofy late 60s show cars, has been restored

Jack Orwell finished the restoration with the help of Ed Newton and Dick Dean. Originally constructed in 1969, with a 455 Buick, that had never been started

Before restoration it was in still decent shape, but the power train was mia, and some barrels were missing too. Time and stupid people sure takes a toll on an old show car.

Here is what is looked like back in the day.

Designed by Ed Newton, and built by Dick Dean

1965, and Dodge was trying to get interest built up, and off the Mustang.

the 1964 Charger Show Car. This car was based on the Polara, and was supposed to be 426 wedge powered, but, they knew no one would be able to tell it was only a dressed up 383.

I just learned Barris didn't create this show car

The Red Foxx Lil Red Wrecker...was originally called The Turnpike Hauler and was designed and built by Bob Resiner and Jay Ohrberg in 1970. Basically an art car made for display only, it was truly "all show, no go". In 1974 it was acquired by George Barris, who painted it red and renamed it Lil' Redd Wrecker

Dan Woods, at 18 made the Milk Truck, and a couple years later, made the Ice Truck. Did you know that between them, he was drafted and did 2 years in Vietnam? Yup

full gallery from my time in the Galpin show car museum at  http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2015/09/galpins-cool-collection-of-60s-show.html

Dan finished the Milk Truck in 1965, and showed it at the Tridents Car Show at the L.A. Sports Arena. It went on to win the Grand Sweepstakes and other awards that weekend. Rod and Custom magazine put it on the cover of their August, 1965 issue with a detailed feature inside.

Ed Roth was so impressed he got Dan to work for him at Roth Studios, and they built the Druid Princess for the Addams Family tv show. The tv show was cancelled before the car was ready.

Roth insisted that the small luggage trunk behind Druid Princess’s coach be a real child-sized coffin. Since undertakers didn’t sell coffins, Roth finally found the son of an undertaker who was hip. He brought $200 and a van to the back alley after working hours. The battery and a surplus aircraft gas tank were interred in the sarcophagus. Larry Watson veiled the Druid Princess in purple – a unique process that produced a unique texture and pattern.

The Ice Truck made the magazines in 1970 with a feature in Rod and Custom, and was at the 1971 Oakland Roadster Show. Then Dan went into business for himself building Ts,

and the fiberglass mold ended up getting sold off later, and stored by a couple different people, even winding up in a storage unit in Washington state

the Barris Rickshaw

George Barris created the 1970 World’s Fair Osaka Rickshaw Taxi for M.P.C. Model Company. The steering tiller is a Simitar sword that operates the power assist unit for steering.

The engine is a Chevrolet 400 with a power glide and a Hurst shifter.
The radiator shell is designed as a coolie hat cover
The grille itself simulated the face of an Oriental driver as the headlights act as ears.
The exhaust headers are simulated Oriental chop suey type with full funnel bells.
The air cleaner is made out of a two headed fiberglass Japanese dragon.
The rear fenders flow over the tires and have Oriental authentic taillights in plastic hung with special chains. Each taillight has a revolving insert of amber and red for stopping and turning.

Galpin's cool collection of 60's show cars, the Milk Truck, Ice, Engine Co. No13, and the Pizza Wagon

Take a look at the difference in steering. The fire truck has a tiller, the Pizza Wagon has a butterfly, and the Ice has a small deep dish wheel. The Milk truck was covered extensively at SEMA last year  http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2014/01/galpin-auto-sports-brought-some-cool.html
