Ca. Assemblyman Jim Patterson is focused on the Ca. DMV's many problems, and is getting the word out how screwed up it's become, despite additional funding

Patterson says his office phone has been ringing non-stop. Truckers here in the Valley tell Patterson the DMV is backlogged for at least six weeks to renew their required driving permits to transport goods in the state.

"The DMV's response was that's as fast as we are going to be able to do it and if we can't get it done by the time you need it then you will have to shutdown your operation."

The DMV has yet to respond to the reported backlog and Patterson says they have ignored his calls

Assemblyman Jim Patterson said the DMV promised to increase operating hours including Saturdays, and less crowding and waiting for customers. Despite an increased budget to accomplish that, Patterson says the DMV has failed to deliver its promises.

The troubled agency admitted on Thursday they may have botched renewals for tens of thousands of customers, despite it's good intentions.

They were trying to cut down wait times by encouraging people to renew their licenses earlier, several months in advance. But their computer system malfunctioned.

The DMV's latest technological glitch? It starts sending out driver's license renewal notices 120 to 150 days before a license expires.

But the online system can only process payments 115 days before the expiration.

As a result, thousands of people paid, but haven't received anything in the mail.

"The DMV is more interested in making excuses than they are in making changes, and this is just one of the big glitches," said Assemblyman Jim Patterson (R-Fresno).

In the last several months, DMV officials have come clean about mishandling voter registration information for 23,000 drivers and double registering as many as 77,000 people. The latest bombshell? As many as 1,500 ineligible voters were registered, including an unknown number of non-citizens.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who has been personally notified of each these major errors by the DMV director. Six months of apathy passed before he began to show concern about public confidence in the electoral process.

The replacement of top-level management at DMV should have already happened. The first reports of unbearable eight-hour wait times and nine-hour computer system outages were reason enough to call for a change. And yet somehow, the architects of the Real ID and Motor Voter plans are still at the helm of this sinking ship.

40% of all calls to the DMV never get through the wait and reach a person... regularly the wait time is 5 hours long
