Why do airplanes not have more wings longitudinally? Back in WW1, they had 2 or 3 latitudinally...

  1. The front wing can create awake that reduces the effect of the second and third and cause unpredictable flying characteristic

  3. Every 'wing' assembly creates drag. It is far more efficient to use one large wing instead of multiples. This is why bi planes died off as a primary form of aircraft. As mentioned the turbulence from any wing structure has a direct effect on the trailing wing or elevator if it is at the rear of the craft. This is why is you look at an airplane from the side the main wing is on a different center line height than the tail assembly.
