I have never seen a car designed to look this bad, on purpose, and yet never show up on any "ugliest cars" list. I present, some grandpa's car that's heading to a concours event, and it's a 1978 AMC Matador

  1. I don’t know what they were thinking,and I agree , I think the 74 might just be worse!

  2. An ouch ward looking thing to say the least. something went terribly wrong in the design department when they were working put the details on the nose. And the 5 mph bumpers are just butt ugly. On the other hand, the interior seats look very comfortable. Unlike the hard foam seats of today. Looks like one could do some serious distance traveling without butt and back fatigue.

  4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But jsfury and Billy are both right. They were butt ugly, but a super comfortable ride. AMC (and Rambler before) were known for comfortable seats and this Matador was no exception. Put in a lot of long days in a number of these - my CB handle in those days was "Bullfighter"! We changed field cars every 5,000 miles and I was driving 50k a year around the midwest. Sometimes a Hornet, occasionally a Javelin or an Ambassador, but most often a Matador.
