California become the first state in the nation to pass a bill to formalize the practice of lane splitting, and establishing lane-splitting guidelines for motorcyclists

I'd like to know why they can't use the shoulder instead. Seems to me that would be safer than going between cars who may change lanes without warning

  1. IT may or not be safer. I think I may be able to argue either way. Nevermind that the shoulder is not for traveling....despite that time you did it with the Probe...lol.

  2. On my last business trip to CA, sitting on the 5 while going from san Diego to Irvine, I had a guy on a bike take off the side view mirror on my rented Vibe splitting lanes. Scared the hell out of me and he was fast enough that it didn't knock him over. All I saw was a helmet disappearing up the road. When I turned it in to Avis, the woman said "happens all the time." A co-worker based in Huntington Beach sent me a copy of a statute that said it was legal provided due care and caution was used.

    1. that seems about right... and sorry it happened to you. I keep an eye on my 6 most of the time, and especially when stuck in traffic when bikers will lane split. Then I pull to a side to give them more room... damned if I want my car hit and mirrors busted off again, someone did that to me in a parking lot, and it cost me 100 bucks
