  2. Today the soldier would be told to not wash his vehicle in a stream or a lake to avoid contaminating the water, rather than damaging delicate parts.

  3. true, but when youre about to lose a war to the Germans and Japanese, polluting the stream is way down the list of priorities, although youre still correct, nowdays, even fighting a major war, to see who controls the world, Germany or Freedom, everyone would still be sitting at their keyboard tweeting outrage about the damage to the environment,

but back years ago, no one even knew about pollution,
I worked at a state park in the early 70s and they had a "rack', a set of ramps built onto a downhill slope, where you could drive a car onto and walk under it to work on it, they would just drain the oil onto the ground, and they finally started catching it in containers, not because a pristine stream and lake was right nearby, but because the oil mixed into the red Georgia clay was as slippery as ice and you couldnt stand up on it.

    1. in 1981 or 82 my step dad was still dumping his used oil on the ground, and it wasn't concern about that being within a stones throw from our water point supplying water to our house, just 25 feet below ground, that stopped that common practice. It was commercials on tv to bring used oil to the parts store
