here's a really old brake system, that new to me, and a very efficient design I suppose

 two shoes, and one cinch strap, that's a triple show set up.

  1. That's an external contracting brake. Same principle as internal expanding. These brake shoes float to conform to the external band, but there is no actual internal expansion. The contracting band serves the same purpose as a brake drum, but there is very little heat dissipation, which is a necessity. Heat disapation is why disc brakes are so much more efficient.
