  2. It's Clément Ader's steam-powered Avion -- this coinage of his became the standard French word for airplane -- at the museum of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. It's not at this exact spot anymore but still very conspicuous if you ever visit the place. A recommended read is Umberto Eco's "Foucauld's Pendulum".
