We had a John Deere that was first built to run on 'Tractor fuel' a type of kerosene distilled from petroleum rather than coal. Tractor fuel in the 30's and 40's was cheaper and more prevalent than gasoline in rural areas. But you couldn't start a John Deere on Tractor fuel, you had to start it on gasoline, and then once it warmed up a bit switch it over to fuel. This meant there were two tanks, one to start and one to run.
