My guess is that they are trying to find the source of an unidentified noise. Maybe not the smartest way to do it!
damn good guess! I figured that, or, tuning on the fly.... neither very smart.
Seems like the accelerator cable snapped and they are accelerating directly from the engine.I did this when I was younger (dummer) on an old Fiat. I sat on the car's fender and turned the carburetor's butterfly while my buddy drove the car. Not the smartest idea but it allowed us to limp back home.
That's what I think as well, and they're trying to avoid a tow fee, or perhaps a fine.
