I didn't know that, very interesting. The only time I've seen this sort of arrangement is on the very early brands of tractors, and for the same reason; when plowing a field it was much easier to have one wheel in the furrow left by the plow in order to keep it plowing in a straight line, after the first pass down the field the tractor virtually steers itself.
