TR Jr. was the first Allied general officer to wade ashore on the Normandy beachhead. He did so armed with a pistol and walking with a cane (he had severe arthritis), he led several assaults along the beachhead in what Omar Bradley would describe as the single bravest act he witnessed in the entire war-he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on D-Day. Unfortunately TR Jr. died of a heart attack in Normandy five weeks after D-Day, just before word arrived that he had been promoted to Major General and reassigned to command of another division.
ReplyDeleteDang, that's more than I learned about him when posting about the few kids of presidents, I learned alot of his other kids... like memorizing the eye chart to get past the test though he had bad eyesight
DeleteHe was quite a guy, he was 56 years old when he disembarked on D-day. For his service in WW! he received the Distinguished Service Cross, and France conferred upon him the Chevalier Légion d'honneur.
