When you're certain that there's nothing for brake systems remaining, you can always go to the emergency back up system... and dump the laundry

There were a couple ways to secure the parachutes to the airplane, one was to tie them together at the back pack straps, then toss the chutes out opposite waist gunner windows at the same time, and try really hard to avoid letting the chutes get hung up on the rudders or elevators
