it must be a source of constant pleasure and delight to be a talented artist, earning a living at art, indoors, at a comfortable desk or draftsman's table. I present a couple maps by Carroll Barnes, who was the only person in the Willy Nilly Map Company

the above colored version is from Crown Print. and Lithographing Co., San Francisco 1946

Both summer and winter

Not only did C. Barnes do a Willy Nilly map for Yosemite, he also did one for Yellowstone, Sequioia,  Kings Canyon, and Mt Rainier natl parks.

Made to be folded and addressed, printed and sent through the mail.

Carroll Barnes, Three Rivers California
Originally from North Carolina, Caroll and his wife Vangel, and his brother in law Gene Gray, found Three Rivers when they decided to honeymoon from their home in Sebastopol to Sequoia National Park, fell in love with the town, and then made Three Rivers their home a few years later by settling down on a ranch on the North Fork https://www.facebook.com/notes/archive-for-three-rivers-artists-studio-tour/news-from-the-artists-colony-of-three-rivers/10152402856941051/

Barnes and Gray mixed local dirt and water into Adobe bricks  to build their adobe art gallery called “Sierraden” (building still located just east of Sierra Lodge on Highway 198).

To get a more complete bio of Carroll Barnes, see Time Magazine July 27, 1942 http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,802374,00.html

Born in 1906, in Des Moines Iowa, Carroll Barnes studied at Washington DC's Corcoran School of Art, he then studied with Carl Milles in the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills Michigan

Barnes was the subject of the 1972 documentary Man, the Artist and Nature, he died in 1997

Barnes, who had once worked as a lumber-jack, settled into a studio near Sequoia National Forest in 1941, Barnes embarked on a 16 ½-foot-tall version of Paul Bunyan, a project which, interrupted by service in the Army, preoccupied him for seven years. Carved from a 2,000-year-old Sequoia tree, (over the actual time of 18 months) the mammoth statue gained distinction as the world’s largest wood carving and earned Barnes a legendary status among sculptors.

His skills earned him a position as a professor of art at the University of Texas

Three Rivers is near Visalia Ca, just South of Fresno

    1. either save this one and print it, or prepare to spend about a thousand dollars. I didn't find any of these for sale, only the prices that they have sold for, and none of them went for less than 500 dollars
