the 1995 earthquake in Kobe toppled the Hanshin Expressway which carried 40% of the Osaka to Kobe traffic (thanks Steve!)


Half of the piers failed at the point above ground where the rebar reduced from 180 bars to 120. The entire route was not reopened until September the following year. The new reinforced concrete piers are nearly 10 feet wider than the old piers, which reduced National Route 43 beneath the expressway to one lane in each direction.
