the license plate “853 OKG” is on the Pontiac Firebird of Jim Rockford, played by Jim Garner on “The Rockford Files.”

I didn't know that it represents the date of Garner’s first feature film, August of 1953
and the postal code for Garner’s birth state of Oklahoma,
and the ‘G’ simply for Garner.

853 OKG =  August 1953, Oklahoma Garner.

  1. By any chance do you know the reason why many shots of the license plate show 835-OKG as the number?

I know that several Firebirds were used when filming the series, often at the same time. My GUESS is that they needed to register one or more of them with the DMV, and finding out the 835-OKG was available, requested that plate. (They either figured no one would spot the difference or even if they did, no one would care.)

However, this is just a guess.

According to wikipedia, "Garner writes in his autobiography that he BELIEVES the letters OKG stood for "Oklahoma Garner" but that he does not know the origin of the number 853."

    1. did you take a moment to read where I explained it all?
And you transposed 853 to 835....
so, look under the photo, and read.
