an obscure and practically unknown airplane, the C-82 Packet, was the plane in the Jimmy Stewart movie Flight Of The Phoenix

  1. It was a rushed design with some issues that did not reach production in time for WWII. A redesigned version, the XC-82B, was produced in much larger numbers as the C-119 Flying Boxcar, which was the most often seen (and recognizable) USAF transport when I was a kid.

Paul Mantz, one of the most famous movie stunt pilots, died flying the "Phoenix" during the filming of Flight of the Phoenix, which is why the movie shows it taking off, but not landing.
