A very cool photo gallery of a pit at the 1962 Southern 500, everything in place, and a place for everything

  1. The picture of the spare wheels shows they have six lug stud holes. NASCAR cars were relatively stock back then. Did some some cars have factory six lug wheels back then, or was this some type of legal modification from stock?

    1. I'll be damned, I hadn't noticed that! I don't know Neil, I have not been the Nascar fanatic that would have an answer about everything from a certain driver or era... I dig the cars, and that's about it. I haven't ever heard of a 6 lug wheel... blows my mind!

    2. Google turns up that 1962 Chevy trucks had 6 lug wheels... well, that makes sense, the trucks would be the place to get parts strong enough to survive a day at the track at over a 100 mph

  2. I think the rear suspension on a NASCAR car is still based on a Chevy truck from that era, so it makes sense that the wheels would be the same.
