1st Checker I've ever seen used as a cop car, but it makes sense, for the same reason they are good taxis, they would make good cop cars

Found on https://www.facebook.com/groups/145497838799022/?fref=nf

But Steve researched Checkers as cop cars, and found the following:

"New York City used Checkers as unmarked cars. Essentially they were set up as standard NYC taxicabs."

The following cities used Checker police cars:

Chelsea, Massachusetts
Chicago, Illinois
 Coburn, Virginia
 Exeter, New Hampshire
Key West, Florida
Mackinaw City, Michigan
 Medford, Massachusetts
Tallmadge, Ohio
 Terrell, Texas
Toronto, Ontario
Woodlake, CA

Possibly Covina, California

Burlington, Massachusetts (auxiliary police)

Upjohn Pharmaceutical and Timken Bearing had both ordered police package Checkers as security patrol cars.

The police package remained available all the way through the end of Checker production in 1982.

  1. Once again Jesse, great bunch of pictures and stories. Hats off to you sir for your commitment to your postings. Love the Checker cop car, thing looks like a tank compared to what's out there today. No doubt something of a bear to drive.

    1. thank you! I'm pleased and satisfied to post good stuff daily, and though some days are better than others, this keeps me happy. Looks like snow tires on the back of the cop car, and since he's wearing gloves, it's probably just before or after winter when this photo was taken.
