Mike emailed me to comment:
" I acquired a '73 Std. Beetle, with such an engine, about which I could find no other references. On removal, and disassembly, I found it to be a Brazilian single relief, small oil pump tube, basically a pre-70 single port short block, with a factory installed set of Brazilian dual port heads, intake, etc., as a later dual port engine, with doghouse type cooler. Thus: a factory '69 spec single port short block, with factory dual port upper end conversion, and yes, the dished VW Van piston/cylinders, in 85.5mm,1585cc size. The PO told me the car was sold to him, as having a factory new long block 16,000 miles prior, and internally, it looked like it, with very low wear. Runs well, still stock."

"It also had the "doghouse" type cooler, a complete dual port top end conversion, on basically a 1500 single port bottom end, made in Brazil."
