If they claim to be in a situation where the dead people made them afraid for their life, they are claiming to be using self defense, and that's where the legal usage of "reasonable person" and "reasonable doubt" get them out of legal problems, usually
As a mailman for 35 years, I've had my run-ins with Pomeranians, but they'd have to be armed with a ractical nuclear weapon before I'd consider them a threat. (Most were nice, though, and easy to bribe with the dog biscuits the post office supplied.)
