During the great depression, the Automobile Club of America had to auction off it's library

the library of the Automobile Club of America was advertised for sale at auction. A mere handful of interested persons appeared to inspect the several thousand bound volumes, the framed posters and photos.

Then suddenly the auction was called off ! Inquiries disclosed that the Bendix Corporation had in a private and seemingly irregular deal acquired this voluminous treasure for a trifling $500!

As for the Bendix purchase, it lay forgotten for some years. Fortunately, before neglect reduced it to a moldy mass it was rescued and presented to the South Bend Public Library.
