New techy stuff for new cars... parental controls, and cell phone app interactivity

Autonet supplies car makers with a board that attaches to the vehicle's CAN bus and includes a 4G radio.

It's capable of powering up and connecting to the Internet in less than half a second. A smartphone app provides basic keychain functionality (lock/unlock, remote start/stop, open trunk, panic on/off) and features a series of apps (car health report, geo zones, valet mode, curfew management, alarm notification, find my vehicle, speed tracker and parental controls).

Autonet's cloud services tie everything together. For example, the car health report, which is really just a mobile website, lets you monitor all aspects of the vehicle, such as gas level, tire pressure and battery voltage.

Autonet Mobile charges $19.95 a month for Wi-Fi capability and $4.95 for one of its driver applications. A package with all of its apps is available for $19.95 a month or $199 a year.

A 4G enabled Telematics Control Unit from Autonet is the first-to-market 4G TCU

It is built to be automotive grade, and is embedded directly in the vehicle’s CAN bus system.

The new platform supports the company’s numerous mobile applications with faster network speeds and allows car manufacturers to easily integrate their own applications with Autonet’s open architecture.

Autonet currently has partnerships with Audi, BMW, Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Tesla, GM, and Subaru.

• Find My Car: Drivers can locate their vehicle anytime, anywhere, and see a history of where their car has been.
• Geo Zones: Allows drivers to define virtual geographical areas to make sure their vehicles follow approved routes and receive notifications if vehicles travel outside the designated zone.
• Speed Tracker: Drivers can define a maximum speed that their vehicle should be traveling and receive notifications when maximum speed is reached.
 • Parental Controls: Allows parents to monitor their teens’ driving habits through features such as call/text blocking, speed alerts, driving zones, check-ins/arrivals, and seat belt alerts.
 • Valet Mode: Track and be alerted if a valet is using your vehicle inappropriately.
 • WiFi Hotspot: Turns drivers’ vehicles into a high-speed mobile WiFi hotspot.
