TIL During the Bosnian War, a former Danish Special Forces officer used his 1979 Camaro to go through the front lines during the Bosnian War to deliver humanitarian aid.

He removed the rear window and installed a metal panel instead, and added a ram bar at the front. And the mine-clearing blade. And if you take a closer look at the radiator grill, you'll notice a yellow rubber duck.

Steel plates were also put behind the seats and across the entire underside of the car. The doors and trunk were lined with Kevlar, and the driver also had radio equipment, fire extinguishers and two spare tires.

Apart from that, the US Air Force also provided him with kevlar panels, steel-plated windows, paint that absorbs infra-red light, run-flat tires, heat detection, night vision and the original 5.7- litre was tuned from 185hp to 220hp, and when nitrous was applied, the output increased to 440hp.

The US Air Force helped modify the Camaro by adding kevlar panels, reconnaissance and stealth tech.

The Ghost Camaro was the brainchild of a Danish Special Forces officer Helge Meyer, who was on duty at the Rhine Main Air Force Base when the war in Bosnia started. The amazing thing is that Meyer never carried a weapon during this war, earning his nickname "Guds Rambo" ("God's Rambo").

  3. Cool story, this dreamlike character who is a 50/50 mix of Rambo and Mad Max - and even with a humanitarian twist. It's a safe bet that Danes would have celebrated him even more than we celebrated the tank commander that took out some Serbian ammo depots, but alas, we ever heard about him. Neither had friend of mine who in the 1990s was in Bosnia as part of the Danish armed forces.

(Apologies for being such a killjoy...)

    1. well, ok. Do you have any idea how many Americans I post about each week I've never heard of that have done cool things? Mind boggling.
My question now is, was this legit? Did it really happen? Or is it made up? If legit, will the Danish post office make a stamp for him and his car?!

  4. Numbering a mere 6M souls, Denmark doesn't have the abundance of heroes and mad characters and crazy things going on that America has. So when somebody stands out like this guy would have if he was real, we do notice.

Remember the scene in 'Thelma & Louise' where a cop is locked in his cruiser's trunk, and a pot smoking bicyclist comes by? Don't know if that has ever happened, but America being America, it's not implausible at all either. (Not sure if an American director would have included such a scene).
