Jay Irving's sidecar cops in the PD4

there must have been a thing this artist had for these two characters, but I don't know what that was

  1. Sidecar on the left. I haven't noticed before, is that common in the US?
Universal in the UK, but then we drive on the left of course.

    1. now dog gone it... I didn't even notice that!
So I just went and looked back through the archives, and it seems that American sidecars are NOT like these paintings, so... it's a 2nd mystery. 1st, why did this artist do a series of cops in a sidecar, and now, 2nd, why is it on the wrong side for American motoring, on an American magazine

  2. Maybe he used a sidecar because they were reasonably common for law enforcement at the time and it was easier to show his characters than in a car.
Perhaps there were operational reasons to have police sidecars on the offside, though I can't think of any.
