A lot of us born before cable tv (1980) will remember the old storyline so often rehashed, of how the damsel in distress gets tied to the railroad tracks so the bad guy can pull off a bank robbery while the hero is busy saving her

This was a popular genre for films; from the silent film era "the Perils of Pauline" all the way into the late 40's and the late 50s. It was such a stereotype, that the song writing team of Leiber and Stoller wrote a song for the Coasters, called "Along Came Jones" that had all the same elements of the movies.
