Gruesome... the 1951 construction of the Hollywood Freeway excavation cut into the old Fort Moore Hill Cemetery, exposing several coffins, and the skeletons. And THAT is why city planners need to be careful historians, and road construction crews are glad for sensors that can detect underground obstructions


the arrow points to the bones of a coffin occupant.

This is at the intersection of Sunset and Hill.


This 1885 survey of Fort Moore shows the location of the military cemetary, and at the top of the map you see Canal, Reservoir, and Short street which later all became Sunset Boulevard

Cemetery Ave became the northern extension of Nill street

Sand street would become California street

Philadelphia street would become the northern extension of Grand Avenue
