This is a Lada Niva, small but very capable 4x4, for me it looks like an early / older version. I bet this photo was taken somewhere in a remote area of the former Soviet Union. With a good chance there are no service station nearby, so if you broke down, you're on your own. This place is also looks abandoned, so my other guess is someone discovered the abandoned car and stole the valuable parts - I am not 100% percent sure, but for me it looks like several parts of the drivetrain is missing, transmission shafts almost sure, maybe the differential in the back, not sure about the gearbox too - and left to rot.
