I think I know the answer. 8-) It is because of LEGO. They struggled to come up with new theme ideas, they developed own themes like "Friends" for teenage girls, "Space" for teenage boys, things like that. Then somehow they can convince Lucasfilm and got the rights for Star Wars franchise. The sales since soaring and they issue any and all movie franchise themed sets they can. Before that mostly die-cast toy manufacturers issued movie and TV series themed vehicles. Of course we all know exceptions like GI Joes, Evel Knievel, Star Wars, Star Trek and many more "dolls" and accessories, but for LEGO and PlayMobil this is relatively new thing. I love those, they know how to target our wallets.
