I've never heard of special valve stem oil before this

  1. In the 60's, I was a gas pump jockey (among other things) at a Texaco service station. We sold "Upper Cylinder Lubricant" in the same sized tin. We dumped it in the gas tank. Don't know if it ever worked. We would also add a cup of ATF for the same reason. Cat Converters and O2 sensors ended all that.

    1. Nice to meet you! I wish I'd been a gas pump jockey for a little while. I was an oil, tire, and battery grease monkey at Sears for a couple of months, and loved it. Especially the tires. I really love doing tires. No idea why, but they are super satisfying to slap on rims, and pull off rims. Balancing is pretty cool too.
Anyway, I would have had a blast being a gas pump guy, and meeting the customers.
ATF into the gas tanks? I don't even understand how any lubricant in the fuel is going to help the "upper cylinder" unless it's lead. To smooth out the valve to head contact area, and maybe, as I'm not certain about this, ease up the wear and tear of the valve seat.
