close.... but Helmets need more side to side durability than pressure from on top to save my brain case.... pressure on top would simple snap the spine and kill the wearer, am I right?

  1. You're right. Lateral movement is the most common trouble. The concerns in motorsports are similar to the NFL, i.e., concussions traumatic brain injury, etc. A secondary but significant concern in open cockpit racing is the risk of impact and penetration by flying debris. John Surtee's son was killed by a tire that landed squarely in the cockpit of his car. Because of similar incidents F-1 has added the halo bar to protect drivers from wheels that might sever go flying, or cars that can occasionally come right over the top of another. Felipe Massa was nearly killed when a suspension spring came out of back of Rubins Barrichello's car and struck him in the head at about 100mph. Though it penetrated Massa's helmet it never the less saved his life.
