Because people would still run out of gas! My Dad had a VW in the late 50's that had a reserve tank and no gas gauge. So, he just drove until the engine stumbled and then flipped the reserve lever.
I think the only time he ever actually ran out was when he forget to flip the lever back after he filled up!
so you're against spare tires as your position with reserve tanks is that people will just use them, and so they'd just use the spare too, and then need another, so they shouldn't get one? You're a dad I think... this line of thinking that "well, you'll just waste it, so you can't have one" seems very parenty
