This is a simple speed indicator (thank you Dennis for the photo of your collection!)

  1. This is a speed indicator. You hold the pointed end to the center of a spinning shaft for one minute. The dial will register how many revolutions. If it goes around several times you count how many times the bump goes under your thumb. Each revolution of the dial is 100 revolutions of the shaft. I have a large collection of these tools, there are many variations. Starrett still makes one today.

  2. It's a revolution counter/tachometer. I've never seen this Huber one, but Starrett made them too, for many years. In fact I have a couple, as they tend to gravitate to the bottom of old tool boxes and the like. Poke the tip into the center of a rotating shaft (most shafts, having been turned between centers, have holes in the end), time it, and count the revs, and calculate the speed.

Starrett made a kit with a couple of rubber caps to fit on the end too, for shafts that have no hole.
