What do you make of this thing on the hood?

  1. A rear facing hood scoop. Perhaps not to catch any bugs?

  2. Looks like maybe one of the big square Mopar hood scoops mounted backwards. Maybe to take advantage of the air at the base of the windshield like the Camaro induction hood did?

  3. Reversed aftermarket hood scoop. Could be they just went with a bigger air cleaner for service life purposes, but most likely the intake and carb are aftermarket and they needed the clearance. That era of Mopar police specials were pretty damn fast to begin with, so I reckon no one wanted to mess with the Villa Park po-po.

  4. This might help explain the hood scoop; "The Village of Villa Park (IL) is an inner western suburb of Chicago near the hub of eastern DuPage County's busiest transportation corridor, 14 miles from O'Hare International Airport and within 25 miles of Midway International Airport. Villa Park lays 19.7 miles directly west of Chicago's Loop, Villa Park provides direct access to downtown Chicago by car and is very convenient to both O'Hare and Midway Airports and the rest of the western suburbs due to its proximity to I-290, I-355, I-294, Illinois Route 53, Illinois Route 83, I-88, Illinois Route 38, and North Avenue." In other words, it was a veritable smorgasbord of traffic stops.

  5. Might have been a vehicle that sat idling alot in the summer and overheating was as issue.
I know someone who works beach patrol in florida, and they have aftermarket scoops and large fans under the hood to move out the hot air.
if a vehicle sits for hours idling, they usually have to raise the hood a little to get the super heated air out.
I have had a chevy pickup idling for hours in south Georgia in the summer, using 12 volt accessories that would drain the battery if we cut off the engine, and first the computer shuts off the AC, then it will shut off the engine if it gets too hot.

    1. Possibly, but one of the points of buying a Police package is larger cooling capacity, filters, etc. to help with fleets that spend a lot of time idling.

  6. I have a crazy idea: What if this is some kind of head up display? Like the hood mounted rev counters, like this?

    1. I wondered that too, might have added some aftermarket gages because there wasn't much room inside after the radios, etc. were added. Still think the best explanation was an aftermarket intake and carb.
