Gas, Cheapest to most expensive is predictable dependant on proximity to oil refineries

$1.65 in New Mexico
$2.65 in San Francisco

Lines of cars spilled onto Route 1 in Edison, New Jersey, at a Raceway gas station where the price per gallon was $1.69, causing traffic to back up so badly employees told CBS2 police asked them to raise their prices to match their competitors. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/01/10/motorists-continue-to-see-lower-prices-at-the-pump/

In its weekly report, AAA said Sunday that the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $2.27, down from $2.35 a week ago. The price is $1.12 cents lower than this time a year ago, when the price was $3.39.

With gas prices as low as they've been in years, dipping below $2 per gallon in many parts of the country, congress is eyeing a gas tax hike to help resolve a looming shortfall in federal highway funding.

The gas tax was last raised in 1993 to its current rate of 18.4 cents per gallon. It's the primary source of funding for the Federal Highway Trust Fund, but it has become a less lucrative source of revenue over time thanks to inflation and the increased fuel-efficiency of automobiles.

Some senators and representatives candidly admit the recent plunge in prices at the pump is a God-send because no politician wants to talk about higher gas taxes when fuel is $4.00 a gallon. Now that it’s below $2.00, even Governor Terry Branstad, for the first time in years, says paying for roads and bridges is a top priority.

  1. Gas here is $1.69 today. (Kansas) We absolutely need to be working on bridges and other infrastructure. All this stuff is getting older, but it's not sexy so no one wants to pay for it until a bridge collapses or something.
