Happy 430 day, a bit late, because this just popped up on Facebook

the 430 cu in 400hp 1958 Mercury

the biggest-displacement, highest factory rated horsepower of any engine in any passenger car in North America during the 1950s.

The reason the factory breather looks fantastic is because it was designed by Lynn Wineland of Rod and Custom magazine.

Underneath are a trio of Holley 2300 two-barrel carbs, the first use of three two-barrel Holleys.  The intake flowed into cast iron heads with huge valves, 2.15 intake and 1.77 exhaust.

When tested on a flow bench, they flowed better than ’64 427 Marauder heads

The 430 was part of the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincon) series of engines that included the 383, 410, 430 and the giant 462.

The Lincoln could be bored and stroked to 540 plus cubic inches, 60 to 80 more inches than the closest Chryslers' 480 cubic inch

  1. My cousin had one of the replicas of the 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Convertible, which was the Indy Pace Car for 1957. It was 20-feet long with the factory-installed continental wheel and platform. It was designed to go to 135 MPH. But what engine was in it? Lemon yellow with a cream leather interior by the way. We kids loved borrowing the car to go cruising.
