I wonder, did most 50s and 60s cars come with trailer hitches, ready to mount a trailer and go camping, or were they all added? Can todays cars get a trailer hitch added and pull a regular size camper trailer or boat trailer?
Always added but were cheap to add. This one looks to me like the springs at the back are not strong enough for the weight. Solution was to put in pump up shocks.
Places like U Haul used bumper clamped on trailer hitches that were pretty strong, but then so were the bumpers. The steel bumpers on trucks usually had a place for a ball to be attached and again the bumpers were pretty strong especially on aftermarket truck bumpers.
I remember back in the day my father ordering cars with a trailer towing package usually came with up graded springs and sometimes even a larger engine , although not always with a trailer hitch and associated wiring, sometimes the hitch and wiring were purchased separate according to the trailer you owned.
If you're talking about current "Cars", most of them probably can't tow very much. You can probably add a hitch for a small utility trailer. You'd probably have to have a crossover or sport utility vehicle to be able to pull a camper or boat. I added a hitch to my Durango and it was pretty easy. I've only used it to carry a bike rack, though.
