the last remaining 1905 American Mercedes, built by Steinway and Sons

I didn't realize that when I took these photos at the Mercedes Benz center in Irvine that is was so unusual

  1. The end of production of the American Mercedes was not due to any fault of the car - production ended because the Long Island, NY factory burnt down in a fire.

    1. well, thanks! I hadn't ever thought to find out why! Did they simply see no reason to invest so much to get it started again?

    It was probably cheaper to import the cars into the United States than build them. Also, the US Merceces was an exact replica of the German-built cars, so there was no unique features that made American assembly a major selling point.
