what's the point of removing the name of the state from the license plate, when the trim ring, and the alphanumeric combo make it obvious it's a California plate?

  1. given the condition of the paint, I would say it is possible that is from normal sun/salt air oxidation over time. recently I acquired my grandma's 2001 van, sat out near the beach it's whole life - license plate looks well on it's way to being like the one in the picture. once the clearcoat goes then the paint and reflective go next. even the California part has naturally been mostly removed
